Itinerary

Day 1 Welcome to Colombia! Cartagena

Bienvenidos a Colombia! Cartagena, one of South America’s most historic cities, welcomes you. Explore the old city, especially the inner walled town, filled with beautiful churches, monasteries, plazas, and mansions. Stay in the vibrant Getsemani neighborhood, known for its colorful street art and authentic atmosphere. Your adventure starts with a 6 pm welcome meeting, followed by a welcome dinner at the delicious Sierpe Restaurant.

Day 2 Cartagena

This morning, embark on a city tour with your leader to familiarize yourself with the stunning city of Cartagena. You’ll visit some of its most significant landmarks, including the historic walled city, vibrant plazas, and colonial architecture that reflect its rich past. As you wander through the cobblestone streets, your guide will provide an insightful introduction to Colombia’s history and culture, sharing stories and facts that bring the city to life. In the afternoon, you have the freedom to explore independently. You might choose to delve deeper into the local museums, relax at a charming café, or stroll along the picturesque waterfront. The choice is yours to uncover the many facets of this captivating city at your own pace.

Day 3 Cartagena

Today, you have the freedom to explore Cartagena at your own pace. For those seeking an enriching experience, consider joining an optional day tour to San Basilio de Palenque. This extraordinary town, which gained freedom 200 years before Colombia’s independence, has preserved its distinct culture and language through the centuries. Guided by an expert local, you’ll delve into the rich history and vibrant traditions that make Palenque a fascinating world of its own.

Day 4 Cartagena - Medellin

Today, you’ll be transferred to Cartagena Airport for your domestic flight south to Medellin, Colombia’s second-largest city and a hub of innovation and culture. Upon arrival, you’ll be taken to your hotel to settle in and prepare for the next leg of your journey. The rest of the day is free for you to explore Medellin or relax at the hotel.

Medellin, known as the “City of Eternal Spring” for its pleasant climate, offers a variety of attractions and activities. You might visit the lively El Poblado district, take a scenic ride on the Metrocable, or explore the Museo de Antioquia and Botero Plaza for a dose of culture. Alternatively, you can unwind at the hotel.

Day 5 Medellin

Today we’ll be touring the famous Commune 13 area of Medellin. You’ll take a public bus from the station to the commune, a journey of approximately 10 minutes. Throughout the 1980s and 1990s, Commune 13 was considered one of the most dangerous neighborhoods in Colombia. Today, it is better known for its vibrant graffiti, street art performances, and walking tours. New infrastructure, including a cable car system and six outdoor escalators, has significantly improved life in this neighborhood.

This afternoon, you have the option to explore independently or join an optional tour of Moravia, Medellín’s most densely populated barrio. Once a sprawling rubbish dump, Moravia has been transformed into a lush, garden-covered hillside, symbolizing the city’s remarkable resilience and renewal.

Day 6 Medellin - Salento

Today, you will enjoy a private transfer from Medellín to Salento, a journey of approximately six hours. Upon arrival, you’ll embark on an educational tour that illustrates the daily tasks of a farmer in the coffee region. This interactive experience allows participants to reconnect with the traditions of past generations. You’ll tour the coffee crops, visit the seedbed to learn about planting and maintenance, and explore the coffee processing area around the house where the coffee is processed. At the end of the tour, you’ll be taught how to prepare a perfect cup of coffee.

This program is available at three different coffee estates, each located in different areas within Quindío. The specific estate you will visit is selected based on the location of your accommodation.

Day 7 Cocora Valley

Salento, often referred to as the “Father of the municipalities,” is the oldest village in the department. Known for its traditional architecture and craft workshops, Salento is an unforgettable place where you can admire colonial houses painted in vibrant colors, balconies overflowing with flowers, and meet friendly locals. Our tour will continue with a visit to the Cocora Valley, where you can appreciate the Wax Palm, the national tree of Colombia, amidst the stunning landscape. We’ll enjoy a walk along the valley’s trails, which should take no more than two hours.

In the afternoon, we’ll savor a delicious lunch and have time to explore the charming village of Salento.

Day 8 Salento - Bogotá

Today, you’ll catch a flight to Bogotá, Colombia’s vibrant capital, around noon. Upon arrival, you’ll be transferred to your hotel before heading to the La Candelaria District. Here, your expert guide will introduce you to the historic buildings and remarkable street art that define this iconic area. As you explore, you’ll learn about Colombia’s storied history and discover why cosmopolitan Bogotá is so full of surprises. In the evening, you’ll gather with your leader and group for a memorable final dinner.

Day 9 Bogota - Farewell

Take the morning to do some extra exploring and share memories of your amazing adventure with your new-found travel friends. After breakfast, we wish each other a fond farewell. If you do have time, you might like to check out Bogotá’s Botanic Gardens or visit the National Museum of Colombia.

Important Notes

ARRIVAL:
Make sure your travel plans allow you to arrive in Cartagena and get to our accommodation by 6pm on the first day of the trip. More information on the accommodation will be provided once the trip is confirmed.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS:
Be sure to check entry requirements based on the passport that you will be travelling with.

TRIP CONFIRMATION:
A trip is listed as PENDING until the minimum guest numbers are reached, at which point the trip becomes CONFIRMED. Guests will be notified when a trip becomes CONFIRMED.

TRAVEL INSURANCE:
Travel insurance is required, and this will need to organised independently. There are a number of travel insurance comparison websites available.
