Tropical Passports – Agnes & Chris

We are Agnes and Chris – aka Tropical Passports – two fellow travellers who have been travelling the world for almost 5 years. From living together 24/7 in a tiny camper van for 2 years to travelling the most isolated islands around the planet – we’ve been on some truly epic trips!

The hunger to see new places and our interest in taking photos and videos on the way have led us to creating content full-time for brands and hotels. If you want to learn how to create engaging content (and make a living out of it!), enjoy hour-long laughs at the beach for sunset, and want to explore some of the most beautiful and remote places on earth, then join us on this amazing trip around the stunning Raja Ampat islands.

Itinerary

Day 1: Fri April 5th 2024 Welcome Aboard & Set Sail!

Welcome to Sorong! Upon your arrival at the airport, our representative will be there to transfer you to the harbour. Here you can enjoy a refreshing welcome drink as you step aboard the beautiful Sea Safari 8 Phinisi boat and meet the crew. Before departing, there will be an introduction and safety procedure briefing.

Our first destination is Piaynemo, and it will take us a full day of sailing to get there. As we sail you can unwind, relax, get to know your hosts and the rest of your group, and prepare for an extraordinary adventure.

Meals – Light Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

Day 2: Sat April 6th 2024 The Piaynemo Archipelago

Welcome to Piaynemo, a picturesque archipelago that epitomises paradise. Prepare to be captivated by the breathtaking views, including the crystal-clear waters, lush islands, and vibrant marine and bird life. Renowned for hosting some of Raja Ampat’s most stunning coral reefs, these remote underwater ecosystems boast an explosion of colour and biodiversity.

Additionally, Piaynemo presents an excellent opportunity for trekking to one of the region’s most iconic viewpoints, offering a mesmerising panorama of clustered hills. From this vantage point, you can also clearly see the huge number of islands emerging from the pristine, turquoise waters below. We’ll visit Rufus Island, which is a great spot to put up the drone if you have one.

You’ll also have ample opportunity to Immerse yourself in the wonders of snorkelling, where vibrant coral formations and a myriad of fish await beneath the surface of these stunning waters.

Meals – Breakfast, Lunch, & Dinner

Day 3: Sun April 7th 2024 Wayag Island - a Raja Ampat Icon

Today we will explore an area that is iconic to the Raja Ampat region. Wayag is located in the northernmost part of the archipelago, meaning we’ll actually cross the Equator today! Uninhabited and exceptionally picturesque, Wayag encompasses a vast area of 155,000 hectares and is renowned for its stunning atolls and lagoons. Every angle offers breathtaking scenery, featuring pristine beaches and distinctive Karst Islands that resemble mushrooms emerging from the sea.

In the morning, we’ll ascend to a summit viewpoint that offers spectacular panoramic views. Again you’ll have plenty of chances to dive in and snorkel to fully appreciate the beauty of this area from both above and below the surface. We’ll get you to all of the best spots in the area, including Shark Point, where you can chill in the shallows with some very friendly reef sharks. Your cameras will be VERY busy today!

Meals – Breakfast, Lunch, & Dinner

Day 4: Mon April 8th 2024 Arborek & Local Village Visit

On our fourth day, our journey will take us to Arborek. Here you can snorkel at a renowned jetty, a location famed for hosting vast schools of fish that seek shelter beneath it, as well as for the vibrant soft corals adorning its piles. While excellent snorkelling can be enjoyed from many points around the island, the reefs at the eastern end are particularly abundant.

Following snorkelling, we will embark on a local village tour of Arborek. Home to approximately 40 families (198 people), the village is renowned for its tight-knit community and traditional crafts, specialising in the creation of hats and ‘Noken’ string bags.

Day 5: Tues April 9th 2024 Red Bird of Paradise & Dampier Strait

We’ll be up early today to go searching for the elusive and beautiful Red Bird of Paradise near Sawingkrai Village on the island of Gam. This is the only area in the world where you can find this stunning bird, with its range restricted to just four islands. We’ll be hoping to find a male, which has an emerald green face, a pair of elongated black corkscrew-shaped tail wires, dark green feather pom-poms above each eye, and a train of glossy crimson red plumes with whitish tips at either side of the breast.

After our morning expedition, we’ll move on to Dampier Strait. Another well-known area of Raja Ampat, Dampier Strait is a protected marine park that separates the islands of Waigeo and Batanta, and covers a total area of 353,531 hectares. The topography of the Dampier allows the Indonesian throughflow to pass through, producing strong currents. As a result, you can see a diversity of endemic marine life that you can’t find anywhere else.

Meals – Breakfast, Lunch, & Dinner

Day 6: Wed April 10th 2024 Dampier Strait & Mansuar Island

Mansuar Island is situated along the northern expanse of Dampier Strait, serving as a crucial waypoint for diverse marine life traversing the region. The remarkably vibrant coral gardens house resident groups of bumphead parrotfish, along with schools of barracuda, unicornfish, and fusiliers.

Encounters with green and hawksbill turtles, as well as sightings of friendly black and white-tip sharks along the reef margins, are commonplace here. The strong currents around the island create an underwater landscape adorned with a forest of red and yellow sea fans. We’ll visit a number of different snorkel spots throughout the day, as well as explore isolated sandbars such as Pasir Timbul. Surrounded by bright turquoise waters, these sandbars offer some great opportunities for unique eye-catching drone photos and video.

Meals – Breakfast, Lunch, & Dinner

Day 7: Thurs April 11th 2024 Farewell & See You Again Soon!
