We’ve been dreaming up this trip for a while and we can’t wait to share it with you. Over 10 days, we’ll take you on a journey through some of the most jaw-dropping landscapes New Zealand has to offer, perfectly timed for our favourite season – alpine spring, when the mountains are alive, the lupins are blooming, and the long evening light is just chef’s kiss.
Starting in Christchurch, we’ll cross the Southern Alps by train, hug the wild West Coast, wind through the Haast Pass, hike under the shadow of Aoraki/Mount Cook, swim in the turquoise waters of Lake Tekapo, and finish up in Queenstown with a gourmet lakeside dinner. It’s going to be one for the books!
Here’s a bit of what we have planned for you:
- Iconic Rail Journey | We’ll cross the Southern Alps together in Scenic Plus class on the TranzAlpine, one of the world’s great train journeys.
- Glacial & Rainforest Exploration | We’ll take you to the electric blue of Hokitika Gorge, the eerie glow of the Tartare Tunnels, and deep into the ancient rainforests of the Franz Josef glacier region.
- Epic Alpine Hikes | From epic views in Wanaka to the Hooker Valley, we’ll walk some of New Zealand’s most spectacular tracks together.
- The Lupin Photoshoot | This one is non-negotiable. We’re taking you to Lake Tekapo at peak lupin season for a dedicated golden-hour shoot. Come ready!
- A Farewell Dinner Worth Celebrating | We’ll close out the trip with a gourmet BBQ dinner at Walter Peak High Country Station, crossing Lake Wakatipu by boat to get there.

Ashley Elliott
Hi, I’m Ashley, a Kiwi travel creator, mum, and adventure chaser based in Auckland. I started exploring more of my own backyard during Covid and haven’t stopped since. I still pinch myself that I get to call this little paradise at the bottom of the world home.
My approach to travel is all about balance. I like beautiful stays, incredible hikes and views, amazing food, a touch of adventure, and plenty of fun and laughter along the way.
I’m so excited to be hosting my very first group trip alongside my good friend Kristina. You can expect a mix of iconic spots and under-the-radar favourites, plenty of laughs, and a trip that feels like travelling with friends who have done all the planning for you.
Kristina Montgomerie
Hi, I’m Kristina, a Kiwi photographer and travel creator based in Auckland. I spend most of my free time exploring beautiful New Zealand, whether on hikes, road trips or finding random hidden gems. What started as me just wanting to get outside, has turned into a real passion for helping others to experience these places for themselves and making adventures feel a little more doable.
I’m all about those moments you can’t really plan. Golden hour after a hike, roadside stops that turn into a highlight of the trip and memorable moments with friends.
This group trip is basically a chance to experience adventures like this together and I’m so excited to be hosting this trip together with my amazing friend Ashley. Whether you’re coming solo or with a friend, our goal is to make this feel easy, fun and genuinely unforgettable.
Itinerary
Day 1 Welcome to Ōtautahi Christchurch
Arrive in Christchurch, check into your accommodation and take a moment to settle in. At 3:30 PM, we’ll meet as a group for a welcome briefing – a chance to get to know each other, go over the plan, and get excited about what’s ahead.
From there, we’ll take you on a walk through Christchurch’s unique post-quake architecture before sitting down together for our first group dinner.

Day 2 The Great Alpine Rail Journey
This morning we transfer to the station and board the TranzAlpine in Scenic Plus class – think wide-open viewing carriages, great food, and some of the most dramatic scenery you’ll pass through on a train anywhere in the world! We’ll roll through through mountainous Arthurs Pass and out the other side onto the wild West Coast.
We’ll be met in Greymouth by our wonderful driver for the rest of the trip and transfer down the coast to Hokitika, a characterful little town with wild beaches and if time permits we will take you to the amazing Hokitika Gorge walk.

Today we explore one of the West Coast’s most photogenic corners. If we didn’t get to Hokitika Gorge the day before, we will start there – that incredible turquoise colour in the water is not a filter, we promise! Then we head south into glacier country.
The Southern Alps act as a massive weather barrier here, creating the rare conditions that allow Franz Josef and Fox Glaciers to flow all the way down to just 300m above sea level, right into the edge of the temperate rainforest. We’ll stop at the glacier viewpoints and take it all in together.
