Itinerary

Day 1. Reykjavik

Hello! Welcome to Iceland. Reykjavik, the world’s northernmost capital, sits just below the Arctic Circle. During winter, the city experiences approximately four hours of sunlight per day, while in summer, daylight extends to 22 hours or more. With volcanic peaks encircling it and surrounded by crystalline ocean waters, Reykjavik offers a captivating blend of contrasts, including a vibrant arts and nightlife scene. Consider arriving early and visiting the National Museum, which chronicles Iceland’s history from the 9th century Viking settlement to the present day. Alternatively, you can join locals at the Laugardalslaug Geothermal Pool for some relaxed socializing. The meeting time for our excursion is at 6pm.

Day 2. Golden Circle / Hvolsvollur

Set off from Reykjavik bright and early this morning to embark on the renowned ‘Golden Circle’ route. Begin your journey at Þingvellir National Park, the historic site of Iceland’s inaugural parliament established in AD 930. Here, marvel at the geological wonder where the American and Eurasian tectonic plates diverge, often evidenced by the prominent Silfra fissure. Then, proceed to Iceland’s Geysir geothermal area, where the Strokkur geyser erupts, sending water soaring 30 meters into the sky. Prepare to be mesmerized by the breathtaking beauty and formidable force of Gullfoss Waterfall, also known as Golden Falls. Continue your adventure to the Hvolsvollur Valley, where you’ll spend the night at a converted Icelandic farm turned guesthouse. Nestled far from the glow of city lights, this guesthouse offers an optimal vantage point for witnessing the Northern Lights. If weather conditions permit, consider taking a serene snow stroll and gazing upward in search of the mesmerizing green auroras.

Day 3. South Coast / Jokulsarlon Glacier Lagoon

Begin your day with a journey to the hauntingly beautiful Skógafoss waterfall, one of Iceland’s largest. This colossal cascade stretches 25 meters wide and plunges an impressive 60 meters, allowing you to experience its raw power up close. For a breathtaking view, brave the (lengthy) climb up a winding staircase to a stunning vantage point, where, on clear days, you might catch sight of a rainbow amidst the mist. Continue your exploration along Iceland’s South Shore, where you’ll encounter more of the country’s renowned natural marvels. From the unique rock formations of Reynisdrangar to the dramatic promontory of Dyrhólaey and the obsidian sands of Reynisfjara’s black beach, this region boasts some of Iceland’s most picturesque landscapes. En route, you’ll pass the remnants of the 1782-1783 Laki eruption’s lava flows. In the afternoon, venture to the iconic Jokulsarlon Glacier Lagoon, a mesmerizing expanse of floating icebergs set against the stark backdrop of charcoal-colored sands. Retire for the evening at a charming farm stay on the South Coast. Weather permitting, you’ll have another chance to step outside and witness the awe-inspiring spectacle of the Northern Lights tonight.

No prior experience is necessary for this hike, offering everyone the opportunity to participate. However, it’s poignant to acknowledge that the glacier is receding due to escalating global temperatures, with the possibility of its disappearance in the coming years. Alternatively, if you prefer not to partake, you can opt for a hike to the glacier’s terminus or revisit the enchanting glacier lagoons at Jokulsarlon or Fjallsarlon. For those seeking a more leisurely morning, explore the idyllic surroundings of the farmstay or venture to the Thorbergur Centre. Later in the day, continue your journey to the picturesque seaside town of Vik, nestled between the vast ocean and towering cliffs. This charming village, Iceland’s southernmost mainland settlement, offers a dramatic coastal setting that is sure to captivate all who visit.
