Prepare for an extraordinary 9-day photography expedition in Iceland, led by Australian photographers Jarrod Andrews aka JROD Captures and Rob Embury. This immersive journey will take you across Iceland’s breathtaking landscapes to photography hotspots, from cascading waterfalls to black sand beaches and majestic ice caves.

We’ll visit the awe-inspiring Seljalandsfoss and Skógafoss waterfalls, capturing their powerful beauty and misty surroundings. Explore the lesser-known Kvernufoss, tucked away in a lush canyon, offering a secluded and magical atmosphere for unique shots. Check out the iconic Solheimasandur Plane Wreck, where a hauntingly beautiful abandoned aircraft rests on a black sand beach, providing a dramatic subject.

Experience the stark contrasts of Reynisfjara Beach, known for its striking basalt columns and crashing waves, and Diamond Beach, adorned with glistening icebergs washed ashore from Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon. Venture into an ice cave, a crystalline underworld of blue hues and intricate formations, offering a surreal setting for captivating photographs.

Capture the rugged beauty of Stokksnes Beach with the iconic Vestrahorn mountain in the backdrop, and seek out hidden waterfalls like Skútafoss and the enchanting Kirkjufellsfoss near the iconic Kirkjufell mountain. Visit the historic Búðakirkja, a striking black church set against Iceland’s wild landscapes, and photograph the unique Viking Sword Bridge at Kolgrafarfjörður.

And let’s not forget the mesmerising Northern Lights aka Aurora Borealis, at one of the best times of year to capture them, before the current solar maximum period of increased activity ends!

Throughout the expedition, your hosts will provide guidance on photography techniques, composition, and capturing the essence of Iceland’s natural wonders. The itinerary will be adjusted depending on conditions, based on Jarrod’s past Iceland experience and the knowledge of our local guide, to ensure the group is at the right place at the right times to capture the best possible light for each location.

JROD Captures

Hey I’m Jarrod, or as my mates call me JROD! I’m a Gym Owner/Personal Trainer by trade but I’ve had a love of travel and adventure for as long as I can remember, which has taken me to 32 countries so far, plus I’ve also lived in the USA, Canada and England. My passion for photography has grown over the years while travelling and I now love to base my trips on creating epic landscape shots, and the harder the location or environment the more I enjoy myself.

My goal when creating a landscape shot is to try and grab your attention and pull you in so that you also want to get out to that place and experience it for yourself or take your own version of that epic photo. I would love for you to go on an epic adventure with me so I can help you create some incredible shots and moments you will never forget.

Rob Embury

Hey, I’m Rob! I’m a travel, landscape, weather and nature photographer based in Melbourne, Australia. I love exploring wild and wonderful destinations, and seeking out the best way to capture them and share them with the world. My goal in photography is to capture scenes that inspire people to witness something they haven’t seen or noticed before.

I’ve run both local and international group photography workshops and tours, and I get a huge buzz from showing people amazing places, and sharing in the excitement when I’ve been able to help somebody learn a new skill or capture something special. My main passion is storm photography, which has seen me head over to the USA’s famed Tornado Alley a handful of times to hunt and photograph the biggest and baddest storms on the planet.

I’m very much looking forward to connecting with creators and explorers, and to hitting up a bunch of beautiful and bucket-list destinations with you! ✌️🌩️📸

Itinerary

Day 1 Welcome to The Land of Fire and Ice!

Welcome to Iceland! Our group transfer will take us to our hotel in Reykjavik to settle in, and we’ll have a group catch-up to get to know each other and go over the planned itinerary.

If the conditions are looking good, we’re within walking distance of the famous Hallgrimskirkja Church, and a short ride away from the Grótta Island Lighthouse. We’ll keep the plans flexible, and if the Northern Lights are out, we’ll definitely be out shooting for a memorable introduction to the trip!

Accommodation: Fosshotel Baron or similar

Meals: Breakfast

Day 2 Vik, Skógafoss, Seljalandsfoss, Solheimasandur Plane Wreck

Today we’ll travel to Vik, a picturesque village on Iceland’s southern coast. Along the way, we’ll visit some of Iceland’s most iconic waterfalls, including Seljalandsfoss and Skógafoss. We’re all about visiting those lesser known spots and hidden gems, so we’ll also explore the lesser-known Kvernufoss. We’ll have plenty of options available for sunset, including the Reynisdrangar View in Vik or at the hauntingly beautiful Solheimasandur Plane Wreck.

Accommodation: Hotel Dýrhólaey or similar

Meals: Breakfast

Note: Our exact itinerary will be flexible based on conditions – your hosts and local guide will determine which spots will give us the best photo opportunities at the best times.

Day 3 Dyrhólaey Lighthouse, Glacier Lagoon, Diamond Beach

Today we’ll travel from Vik to Glacier Lagoon, a breathtaking sight where icebergs float serenely on the water. We’ll catch the sunrise at Dyrhólaey Lighthouse or Reynisfjara Beach and weather permitting, the stunning Fjaðrárgljúfur canyon. If we missed the Solheimasandur Plane Wreck the previous day, we can fit this in today. Our goal will be to shoot sunset either at Diamond Beach or Glacier Lagoon.

Accommodation: Hotel Smyrlabjorg or similar

Meals: Breakfast

Note: Our exact itinerary will be flexible based on conditions – your hosts and local guide will determine which spots will give us the best photo opportunities at the best times.

Day 4 Ice Caves, Stokksnes Beach, Vestrahorn

Today we explore the incredible ice caves near Glacier Lagoon, capturing the surreal and magical blue hues of these natural wonders. We’ll look to shoot the black sand Stokksnes Beach at sunrise and possibly again at sunset, hopefully with dramatic broken ice sheet formations in the foreground, and with the towering Vestrahorn mountain as a backdrop.

As darkness falls, if the conditions are on our side, we’re in a spectacular place for a Northern Lights hunt – with Stokksnes Beach, Stokksnes Lighthouse and Vestrahorn providing perfect foreground!

Accommodation: Hotel Smyrlabjorg or similar

Meals: Breakfast

Note: Our exact itinerary will be flexible based on conditions – your hosts and local guide will determine which spots will give us the best photo opportunities at the best times.

Day 5 Stokksnes Beach, Vestrahorn, Skútafoss, Vik

We’ll make our way back to Vik today, and have the opportunity to revisit any missed spots or capture more images at our favourite locations. The conditions change dramatically in Iceland, so you can visit the same location multiple times and capture vastly different images – we want to make sure our guests get the best of everything!

We’ll likely start with a sunrise shoot at Stokksnes Beach or Vestrahorn and then visit Skútafoss waterfall, offering unique perspectives from both the top and bottom. There are plenty of excellent photos spots for us to consider in the Vik region for sunset and hopefully another mesmerising Aurora Borealis show!

Accommodation: Hotel Dýrhólaey or similar

Meals: Breakfast

Note: Our exact itinerary will be flexible based on conditions – your hosts and local guide will determine which spots will give us the best photo opportunities at the best times.

Day 6 Grundarfjörður, Snaefellsnes Peninsula

Today involves a slightly longer travel day as we make our way to Grundarfjörður, a town nestled amidst stunning Icelandic landscapes on the Snaefellsnes Peninsula. We’ll capture sunrise shots at one of Vik’s many awesome spots before heading off.

We may visit the iconic Búðakirkja (Black Church) on the way (we’ll be back here for more time tomorrow though), capture drone footage at Kolgrafarfjörður, known for its Viking Sword Bridge, and aim to end the day with a sunset shoot at the majestic Kirkjufellsfoss waterfall. If the Northern Lights are out, this is one of the most breathtaking spots in the world to witness its colourful dance!

Accommodation: Fosshotel Stykkishólmur or similar

Meals: Breakfast

Note: Our exact itinerary will be flexible based on conditions – your hosts and local guide will determine which spots will give us the best photo opportunities at the best times.

Day 7 Búðir, Snaefellsnes Peninsula

We’ll start our second day on the stunning Snaefellsnes Peninsula with a sunrise shoot at either Kirkjufellsfoss or one of the many other incredible vistas this region offers. We’ll explore Gatklettur, known for its dramatic cliffs and stone bridge formations, and visit to Hellnar Church. As the day draws to a close, we’ll photograph the sunset at Búðakirkja (Black Church) and keep our eyes peeled for the Northern Lights.

Accommodation: Fosshotel Hellnar or similar

Meals: Breakfast

Note: Our exact itinerary will be flexible based on conditions – your hosts and local guide will determine which spots will give us the best photo opportunities at the best times.

Day 8 Eldborg Volcano, Reykjavik

Today is our last full day, and there is plenty for us to shoot on our way back to Reykjavik. We’ll shoot the sunrise at Hellnar Church, Búðakirkja or one of the many other spectacular options nearby before hitting the road. Along the way, we’ll explore Eldborg, a striking volcano known for its unique shape.

Back in Reykjavik, we can hit up any landmarks we missed on the first day and enjoy a celebratory dinner together to showcase all of the amazing photos we have captured on our expedition. If we’re lucky, the Northern Lights might give us a spectacular farewell display for our last night!

Accommodation: Fosshotel Baron or similar

Meals: Breakfast, Farewell Dinner

Note: Our exact itinerary will be flexible based on conditions – your hosts and local guide will determine which spots will give us the best photo opportunities at the best times.

Day 9 Farewell to Iceland

Sadly, today our adventure ends. We’ll have breakfast together at the hotel, and if your SD cards aren’t already full, we will likely be able to squeeze in another sunrise shoot somewhere in Reykjavik, possibly Hallgrimskirkja Church.

For those departing Iceland today, a group transfer to the airport has been organised.

Important Notes

WEATHER CONDITIONS:
Iceland is a land of weather extremes. Conditions can change quickly, and it’s important that you are prepared for everything. Iceland’s average temperature range for Feb is between -3 and +3°C (26-34° Fahrenheit), but it can get a LOT colder with wind chill included. We’ll provide a detailed packing list prior to the trip to help make sure you you have everything you need. The weather conditions will also play a part in our photography experience, which is why the itinerary has been curated to allow for flexibility. We can’t guarantee or predict the weather, but we will be paying constant attention to conditions and forecasts to decide our movements. Be prepared to be flexible and to move at short notice to take advantage of good conditions.

NORTHERN LIGHTS:
The Aurora Borealis is unpredictable. We can’t guarantee that we will see it, or that conditions will be favourable for viewing it. We have a range of apps to help predict aurora activity, as well as apps to help us predict cloud cover, plus the experience of our local guide. We will look to take every possible opportunity to chase and photograph the aurora. Whilst we will try to provide advance notice as much as possible, this may mean some late nights or wake-up calls.

ARRIVAL:
A group airport transfer from Reykjavik Airport is included – once the trip is confirmed we will coordinate with guests to help them coordinate their arrival flights.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS:
Be sure to check entry requirements based on the passport that you will be travelling with.

TRIP CONFIRMATION:
A trip is listed as PENDING until the minimum guest numbers are reached, at which point the trip becomes CONFIRMED. Guests will be notified when a trip becomes CONFIRMED.

TRAVEL INSURANCE:
Travel insurance is required, and this will need to organised independently. There are a number of travel insurance comparison websites available. We do not recommend organising this until your trip is CONFIRMED. TIP: If you have a credit card there may be travel insurance included as part of your benefits, so check with your bank.

BOOKING FLIGHTS:
We do not recommend booking flights until your trip is CONFIRMED.

BOOKING T&Cs:
We recommend you familiarise yourself with our Booking Terms & Conditions for more information about our booking, deposit and cancellation policies.
