A Journey Through Vietnam’s Real North with Ti-Anna Harris

Mar 1, 2027 - Mar 9, 2027

$2,075  USD

BOOK WITH $400 DEPOSIT

Hosted by Ti-Anna Harris and supported by experienced local guides, this nine-day journey is crafted for those who want to move past the surface of Northern Vietnam – trading the tourist rush for a slower, more considered pace, and the familiar for the genuinely revealing. From the thousand-year-old guild streets of Hanoi to the dramatic limestone karsts of Ninh Binh and the emerald waters of Lan Ha Bay, the route connects three distinct landscapes through the thread of a culture that has endured, adapted, and remained fiercely itself.

This is a journey built around access. You will dine on heirloom recipes at a private family courtyard table, navigate ancient waterways by traditional sampan, and spend two nights aboard a boutique Indochine-style vessel in the quieter, less-visited reaches of Lan Ha Bay. Expert-led visits to the Hanoi Temple of Literature and the ancient imperial capital of Hoa Lu ground the experience in the deep, layered history of the north – while dawn kayaking, cycling through the remote Viet Hai fishing village, and exploring the wartime chambers of Trung Trang Cave offer moments of quiet adventure along the way.

The pace is deliberate. Two nights at a rustic eco-lodge in the Trang An Valley allow time to breathe, explore, and absorb a landscape of rare beauty – one that most visitors pass through far too quickly. This is Northern Vietnam as it deserves to be experienced: slowly, deeply, and in the company of people who know it well.

Ti-Anna Harris

Hi! I’m Ti-Anna, a Caribbean travel content creator and solo traveller passionate about culture, adventure, and meaningful travel. I’ve been living in Vietnam for the last 6 months and this country is just simply beautiful. I want to take a group of likeminded travellers to see the beauty and experience my favourite parts of Vietnam. Let’s travel together💃🏿

Itinerary

Day 1 Arrival & Old Quarter Street Food

Touching down at Noi Bai International Airport, you are transferred directly into the heart of Hanoi’s legendary Old Quarter – a dense, atmospheric neighbourhood where centuries of trade and culture are written into every lantern-strung street. After settling into your boutique hotel, the evening begins in earnest with a guided street food immersion through the historic guild streets.

Your guide navigates the neighbourhood’s best-kept culinary secrets, from steaming bowls of authentic northern phở and delicate bánh cuốn to Hanoi’s iconic egg coffee – a rich, velvety creation that has become as much a part of the city’s identity as the streets themselves. It is an evening that sets the tone for everything to follow.

  • The Q Boutique Hotel, Hanoi (or similar)

🍽️ Included Meals

  • Dinner (Street Food)

  • Evening Street Food Immersion, Old Quarter

Day 2 Train Street & The 36 Guild Streets

The morning begins with one of Hanoi’s most extraordinary urban curiosities – Train Street, a narrow residential lane where the daily freight train passes within inches of doorsteps and café tables, a collision of the everyday and the remarkable that only this city could produce. From there, the walk continues through the 36 Guild Streets, where artisans still practice trades that have defined these blocks for eight centuries.

The afternoon is left entirely free for personal discovery – an invitation to move at your own pace through one of Southeast Asia’s most layered cities. For those who want to experience Hanoi as the locals do, a cold bia hơi on a busy corner offers one of the most authentic and unhurried hours the city has to offer.

Day 3 Temple of Literature & Courtyard Dinner

Founded in 1070 and dedicated to Confucius and the scholars who studied within its walls, the Temple of Literature remains one of Vietnam’s most significant historical sites – its tiered pavilions, carved stone steles, and ornamental gardens offering a rare sense of stillness at the centre of a restless city. The afternoon is free to explore the French Quarter, where broad tree-lined boulevards and elegant colonial architecture speak to another chapter in Hanoi’s layered past.

The evening brings one of the journey’s most memorable experiences: a private dinner held within a traditional Vietnamese courtyard home. Prepared from multi-generational family recipes and accompanied by free-flow Hanoi Beer, it is an intimate and generous introduction to the city’s domestic heart.

Day 4 To the Karsts of Ninh Binh

Departing Hanoi by private bus, the landscape transitions gradually from the city’s density into something far more elemental – vast flat rice paddies stretching to the horizon, broken suddenly by dramatic limestone karsts that rise sheer from the earth. Ninh Binh is a region of quiet, almost startling beauty, and arrival at your bamboo-and-timber eco-lodge in the Trang An Valley makes the contrast with city life complete.

The afternoon is unscheduled, designed for rest and gentle exploration. The lodge’s bicycles offer a simple and rewarding way to move through the valley lanes – past working farms, water buffalo, and paddies that catch the late light in long, golden reflections.

🏨 Accommodation

  • An’s Eco Garden, Ninh Binh (or similar)

🍽️ Included Meals

  • Breakfast

✅ Activities

  • Private Bus Transfer from Hanoi to Ninh Binh
  • Free Afternoon Cycling Through the Trang An Valley

Day 5 Hoa Lu Ancient Temples & Bich Dong Waterways

The ancient citadel of Hoa Lu served as Vietnam’s first imperial capital in the 10th century, its temples and ceremonial gates still standing among the karst formations that the Dinh and Le dynasties chose deliberately as natural fortifications. Walking its grounds today, the scale of the landscape and the age of the stonework combine to create a genuinely affecting encounter with Vietnam’s earliest history.

The afternoon shifts to the water. Traditional sampans, navigated by local oarswomen using a distinctive foot-rowing technique, carry the group through the cave pagodas of Bich Dong and deeper into the region’s extraordinary water-locked scenery – a journey through narrow gorges, dripping limestone archways, and stretches of mirror-calm river that rank among the most beautiful in northern Vietnam.

🏨 Accommodation

  • An’s Eco Garden, Ninh Binh (or similar)

🍽️ Included Meals

  • Breakfast
  • Lunch

✅ Activities

  • Visit to Hoa Lu Ancient Temples
  • Traditional Sampan Boat Ride Through Bich Dong Cave Pagodas

Day 6 Into Lan Ha Bay

Transferring to the coast, the group boards a luxury 16-cabin junk vessel and sails into Lan Ha Bay – a less-visited and arguably more spectacular counterpart to Ha Long Bay, its thousands of limestone islands rising from waters that shift between deep green and vivid turquoise depending on the light. The sense of scale and solitude out on the bay is immediate and profound.

The afternoon is spent kayaking into hidden coves where sheer karst walls rise on all sides, followed by a passage through the Dark and Bright Cave by bamboo boat – a remarkable transition between enclosed chambers and open sky. Sunset is observed from the deck with cocktails in hand, the islands silhouetted against fading light.

🏨 Accommodation

  • La Regina Cruise (Balcony Cabin), Lan Ha Bay (or similar)

🍽️ Included Meals

  • Breakfast
  • Lunch
  • Dinner

✅ Activities

  • Sailing into Lan Ha Bay
  • Kayaking into Hidden Coves
  • Bamboo Boat Through the Dark and Bright Cave

Day 7 Viet Hai Village & Island Life

Cycling from the cruise’s anchorage through the limestone interior of Cat Ba Island, the group reaches Viet Hai – a remote fishing and farming village that remained accessible only by water until relatively recently. It is a place largely untouched by tourism, and the ride through its surrounding landscape is as rewarding as the destination itself.

The afternoon anchors at the “Three Peach” sandbar for swimming in calm, sheltered waters before the evening programme begins on deck – a spring roll cooking class that draws on the region’s fresh ingredients, followed by squid fishing off the stern as the bay settles into darkness. It is a day that captures the particular rhythm of life on the water.

🏨 Accommodation

  • La Regina Cruise (Balcony Cabin), Lan Ha Bay (or similar)

🍽️ Included Meals

  • Breakfast
  • Lunch
  • Dinner

✅ Activities

  • Cycling Through Cat Ba Island to Viet Hai Village
  • Swimming at the “Three Peach” Sandbar

Day 8 Dawn Kayak & Return to the Capital

The final morning on the bay begins before the rest of the world stirs – a dawn kayak session across water so still it reflects the karsts in near-perfect detail. Before departing the bay, the group visits Trung Trang Cave, a vast geological formation that served as a field hospital during the American War, its chambers carrying both natural grandeur and significant historical weight.

The transfer back to Hanoi brings the journey full circle, returning to the city where it all began. The evening closes with a refined farewell dinner in the Old Quarter – an opportunity to reflect on the distance travelled, the people encountered, and the landscapes that will linger long after the journey home.

🏨 Accommodation

  • The Q Boutique Hotel, Hanoi (or similar)

🍽️ Included Meals

  • Breakfast
  • Lunch
  • Dinner

Day 9 Final Breakfast & Departure

The last morning in Hanoi offers a quiet moment to absorb the city one final time – breakfast overlooking the rooftops of the Old Quarter as the streets below resume their familiar rhythm. It is worth pausing here, in the knowledge that the days behind you have covered an extraordinary breadth of experience: ancient capitals and open water, limestone cave systems and candlelit courtyards, the noise of the city and the stillness of the bay.

Vietnam rewards those who pay attention, and this journey has been designed to do exactly that – to move through the country at a pace that allows its complexity and beauty to register fully. Your private transfer to Noi Bai International Airport departs following breakfast, carrying you onward with a richer understanding of one of Southeast Asia’s most compelling destinations.
