Safari Through the Soul of East Africa with Vaughn

Join your host Vaughn Colquitt on a twelve day journey through the wild heart of East Africa, where dust rises behind a 4WD Land Cruiser over the Maasai Mara and the hush of a lakeside dinner settles over the shores of Lake Victoria, Africa’s largest lake. This is safari country at its most authentic: two nations, three legendary parks and cultures that have called this land home for thousands of years.

Travellers trace a path from the buzz of Nairobi through the Maasai Mara, across the border into the Serengeti, down into the Ngorongoro Crater and out to the ancient lands of the Hadzabe people near Lake Eyasi. Along the way there’s a village visit with the Maasai of Loita Hills, full day game drives chasing the Big Five, an optional sunrise hot air balloon safari over the savannah and a close up descent into one of Africa’s most spectacular calderas.

This is a trip built for those who want their safari served with substance: real cultural connection alongside the wildlife, enough time in each park to let the magic actually happen, and a heartfelt homecoming in Nairobi, where Vaughn shares her own family’s story and guests have the chance to join a community project founded by her late grandfather. Twelve days, two countries, and a set of stories that will stay with you for years.

Itinerary

Day 1 Karibu to Kenya

Karibu! The moment you touch down in Nairobi, Kenya’s vibrant capital and the gateway to East Africa, the adventure begins. If an early arrival leaves a few spare hours, there’s time to dip into the city’s history before the group comes together, whether that’s the National Museum of Kenya, the colonial era charm of the Karen Blixen Museum, or the traditional homesteads on show at the Bomas of Kenya.

As evening rolls in, everyone gathers for an official welcome meeting at 6pm, meeting your local leader and fellow travellers for the first time. From there, settle into a group welcome dinner together, the perfect way to share the excitement before the real adventure begins tomorrow.

Day 2 Into Maasai Country

This morning, Nairobi falls away behind you as the route heads for one of Africa’s most celebrated wildlife havens, the Maasai Mara. The journey itself is an experience, winding through Loita Hills, a remote and largely untouched region where the Maasai people continue to live much as they always have.

Here, you’ll visit Tepesua Village, a community renowned for supporting Maasai women’s health and education. Maasai warriors greet visitors with traditional song and dance before sharing insights into a culture that has endured for centuries. Walk through the village, founded to support widows who lost their cattle to drought, and see the Tepesua Widows Income Project in action, where local women craft handicrafts, bags and sustainable goods to support their families. From there, continue on to the edge of the Maasai Mara, arriving at your tented camp as the wilderness opens up around you.

Today is about immersing yourself fully in the wonders of the Maasai Mara. Climb aboard your 4WD vehicle for a full day safari traversing the reserve’s diverse landscapes, where antelope graze open plains, giraffes amble between acacia trees, and lionsleopards and sweeping herds may all make an appearance.

For those wanting something above and beyond, an optional sunrise hot air balloon safari awaits. Rising before dawn, you’ll transfer to the launch site for a safety briefing before drifting silently above the savannah at treetop height, the early morning stirrings of the Mara’s wildlife visible far below. Landing comes with a champagne bush breakfast, a grand start before returning to camp to continue the day’s safari adventures.

Day 4 Crossing to Lake Victoria

Today calls for a long and rewarding travel day as the route heads toward the Kenya-Tanzania border and onward to the magnificent Lake Victoria, the primary source of the Nile, the longest river on Earth. Its shores stretch across Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda alike, and today you’ll see them for yourself.

Travel time runs approximately 10 to 11 hours including border formalities, so settle in and watch the scenery change along the way. On arrival, unwind with a lakeside dinner, a fitting moment to reflect on the sheer scale of the world’s largest tropical lake as it stretches out before you.

Day 5 Welcome to the Serengeti

After a morning departure from Lake Victoria, the journey continues into one of Africa’s most iconic wildlife destinations, the Serengeti. Entering via the western corridor, today marks your first true taste of safari in Tanzania, with a scenic game drive woven into the journey toward your lodge.

Keep an eye on the sweeping plains as you travel deeper into the park, with plenty of chances to pause for sightings and photographs. Travel time runs approximately 4 to 5 hours, extended naturally by game viewing en route. Arrive at your central Serengeti camp with time to settle in before dinner, then sit back and soak in an authentic safari evening surrounded by the sounds of the African wilderness.

Day 6 Deeper into the Serengeti

Wake to another spectacular day in the Serengeti, starting with an early morning 4WD safari to catch the wildlife at its most active. Cruise across open plains and past kopjes scattered with resting lions, keeping an eye out for cheetah stalking the grasslands, leopard draped in the branches of acacia trees, and elephant herds moving between waterholes. After a relaxed brunch back at camp, head out again this afternoon for a second drive deeper into the park, when the light softens and different wildlife tends to emerge, from grazing giraffe and buffalo settling in for the evening to the first stirrings of nocturnal hunters like hyena.

Depending on the time of year and where the wildlife sightings are concentrated, today’s drives may run as a single full day safari rather than separate morning and afternoon outings, maximising time spent actually viewing wildlife rather than commuting to and from camp. Either way, this is prime territory for spotting the Serengeti’s signature scenes, from wildebeest and zebra moving in their thousands to the big cats that follow them, along with hippo wallowing in the park’s rivers and, if the timing lines up, sightings of the Great Migration itself as it moves through the ecosystem.

Day 7 Descending Into Ngorongoro

One final game drive through the Serengeti awaits this morning before exiting the park and continuing on to the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. Here, you’ll transfer into the park’s open roofed 4WD jeeps and descend into the crater itself, where wildlife roams with far less wariness of humans, making for close range encounters you won’t forget.

Take in the sweeping views from the crater’s rim before heading down to the floor, where lakes, rivers, woodlands and hills shelter wildebeestlionzebracheetahbuffalogazelle and the endangered black rhino. Colourfully dressed Maasai people are often seen here too, watering their cattle at the lake. By afternoon, leave the crater behind and continue to Karatu, a small town on its outskirts that becomes home base for the next two nights.

Day 8 Ancient Lands of the Hadzabe

This morning’s drive heads toward Lake Eyasi, a vast seasonal soda lake, with a stop at a scenic viewpoint to take in the shimmering waters from above. The land surrounding Lake Eyasi has been home to the Hadzabe people for more than 10,000 years, making it one of the few places in Africa where traditional tribal life continues with minimal modern influence.

Spend the day immersed in this remarkable culture, meeting community members and joining in daily activities like huntinggathering and traditional dance. Listen out for the Hadzabe’s distinctive click language, believed to be among the oldest spoken languages still in use today. Travel time runs approximately 5 hours before returning to the lodge in Karatu to relax and unwind for the evening.

Accompanied by an expert local guide and armed ranger, the trek winds through Ngorongoro’s rainforest, keeping a keen eye out for animal tracks along the way, with varied birdlife and wild scenery making for a memorable walk.

By afternoon, it’s time to head to Arusha for the final night in the bush, with travel time running approximately 2.5 hours.

Day 10 Back to Nairobi

After breakfast, wave goodbye to the bush and begin the overland journey back across the border into Kenya. There’s no need to rush, so settle in and let the last stretch of East African scenery roll by: the plains of northern Tanzania giving way to the rugged edge of the Great Rift Valley, small trading towns, and glimpses of Maasai herders going about their day. Travel time runs approximately 5 to 6 hours including border formalities at Namanga, and it’s a fitting final look at the landscapes that have carried you from the Mara to the crater and back again.

Roll into Nairobi by late afternoon and transfer to your accommodation for an overnight stay. With safari dust finally behind you, the evening is yours to unwind, whether that’s putting your feet up after days on the move or getting out to explore a little more of the city before tomorrow’s final full day together.

Day 11 Nairobi, With Heart

A full day in Nairobi awaits, and today Vaughn takes the lead, sharing a personal connection to the city and to Kenya with the group. Guests can join an optional half day at Mukuru Kwa Njenga with Missions for Kenya, Inc., a feeding and education program founded by Vaughn’s late grandfather, Rev. Grant Kelly, spending the morning volunteering at Kwa Njenga Primary School and connecting with students, staff and members of the community.

Those who prefer not to visit the school can enjoy a free day in the city instead, whether that’s relaxing by the hotel pool, some late shopping, or a visit to the Sheldrick Wildlife Trust elephant nursery. The day rounds off with a farewell dinner, the perfect chance to reminisce, swap stories and reflect on an unforgettable shared experience.

Day 12 Kwaheri Kenya

After breakfast, it’s time to say goodbye. Looking back over the past twelve days, it’s hard to believe how much ground has been covered: the dust of the Maasai Mara, the endless horizons of the Serengeti, the descent into the Ngorongoro Crater, and the quiet company of the Hadzabe beside Lake Eyasi. Few journeys pack in so much wilderness, culture and connection in one trip.

There’s just enough time this morning to soak in Nairobi’s early light before heading to the airport. Safe travels home, and here’s to the stories that will keep this safari alive long after the plane lands.
