Rebecca Walsh – Hike Like a Woman

Hi, I’m Rebecca. I’m a guide, ski instructor, Army Veteran, breast cancer survivor, mountain climber, and a big fan of adventure travel. I started Hike Like a Woman in 2014 because I wanted to smash barriers to entry into the outdoors and help women explore. So far, I’ve led over 50 group trips, from the Wyoming wilderness to the rugged Andes and the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro. I’d love to have you join me on an adventure.

Itinerary

Day 1 Les Houches to Les Contamines

Your adventure begins in Les Houches at 9 a.m., where you’ll take the Bellevue cable car for a stunning aerial view over the Chamonix Valley. The trail ascends through alpine meadows and across the dramatic Col de Tricot, offering breathtaking views of the Bionnassay Glacier. A descent leads through charming mountain pastures at Alpage du Truc, where wooden chalets dot the landscape. Finally, you continue through serene forests before reaching Les Contamines, a traditional French village where you can unwind and enjoy a hearty Savoyard meal.

  • Walking Time: 5.5 hours
  • Elevation Gain: 650 meters (2,130 feet)

Day 2 Les Contamines to Les Chapieux

The day begins on a historic Roman road, an ancient pathway winding through larch forests and alpine meadows. As you ascend, the imposing peaks rise around you, leading to the first major pass, Col du Bonhomme (2,329 m). From here, a further push takes you over the Col de la Croix du Bonhomme (2,479 m), where panoramic views stretch across the valleys. The descent into Les Chapieux is equally rewarding, with sweeping green pastures home to grazing cows and the region’s famous Beaufort cheese farms.

  • Walking Time: 7 hours
  • Elevation Gain: 1,450 meters (4,750 feet)

Day 3 Les Chapieux to Col Chécrouit

Leaving Les Chapieux, the path gently ascends through remote alpine terrain before reaching the Col de la Seigne (2,516 m), marking your entrance into Italy. The jagged peaks of the Aosta Valley welcome you, providing incredible views of Mont Blanc’s imposing Italian face. As you descend, the landscape softens, leading into the scenic valley below. After a well-deserved break in the charming town of Courmayeur, you’ll begin the final climb towards Col Chécrouit, where a cozy mountain hut awaits, offering one of the best sunset spots on the trail.

  • Walking Time: 8 hours
  • Elevation Gain: 1,190 meters (3,900 feet)

Day 4 Col Chécrouit to Refuge Bonatti

The morning starts with a picturesque descent into Courmayeur, where you can grab an espresso and soak in the Italian mountain town atmosphere. From here, the climb towards Refuge Bertone begins, offering sweeping views of the entire Mont Blanc range. The trail follows a stunning high traverse, winding along the ridge with breathtaking vistas at every turn. Your destination, Refuge Bonatti, is perched above the Val Ferret, providing an unforgettable overnight stay in a remote setting. Luggage access is unavailable tonight, so pack accordingly.

  • Walking Time: 6 hours
  • Elevation Gain: 1,100 meters (3,600 feet)

Day 5 Refuge Bonatti to La Fouly

Today’s route takes you deeper into the Alps, with an exhilarating ascent to the Grand Col Ferret (2,537 m), where you’ll cross into Switzerland. This high pass offers incredible views of Mont Dolent, a peak that marks the meeting point of France, Italy, and Switzerland. The descent into the Valais region is gentle, leading through rolling green pastures and forests before arriving in La Fouly, a peaceful Swiss village known for its traditional wooden chalets and postcard-worthy scenery.

  • Walking Time: 6.5 hours
  • Elevation Gain: 850 meters (2,650 feet)

Day 6 La Fouly to Trient

The route today follows a scenic path high above the Rhône Valley, offering breathtaking views of distant glaciers and alpine meadows. Depending on the group’s preference and conditions, you may take the more direct standard route or the more challenging, dramatic Fenêtre d’Arpette (2,665 m), a high-mountain pass with rugged rock formations and sweeping vistas. Regardless of the path chosen, the day concludes in Trient, a charming Swiss village known for its pink church and peaceful mountain atmosphere.

  • Walking Time: 5-7 hours
  • Elevation Gain: 715 to 915 meters (2,345 to 3,000 feet)

Day 7 Trient to Le Tour

The final stretch of the journey leads back into France via the Col de Balme (2,191 m), where you’ll be rewarded with a spectacular panoramic view of Mont Blanc and the entire Chamonix Valley. The descent meanders through alpine meadows and forests, culminating in the charming hamlet of Le Tour. From here, a scenic train ride returns you to Les Houches, bringing your unforgettable trek around Mont Blanc to a close.

  • Walking Time: 5 hours
  • Elevation Gain: 1,000 meters (3,280 feet)
