This immersive nine-day journey traces the ancient Kumano Kodo pilgrimage routes through Japan’s sacred Kii Mountains, blending meaningful hiking with deep cultural and spiritual discovery. Hosted by Rebecca Walsh from Hike Like a Woman, and led throughout by an experienced English-speaking guide, this is a thoughtfully curated adventure designed for travellers who want more than just a walk – they want context, connection, and care.
Beginning in the vibrant city of Osaka, the journey gradually moves into rural Japan, where cedar forests, moss-covered stone paths, and centuries-old shrines set the rhythm of daily life. Walking the Nakahechi route, you will visit revered sites including Kumano Hongu Taisha and Kumano Nachi Taisha, soak in historic onsens, and experience the quiet beauty of mountain villages that have welcomed pilgrims for over a thousand years.
To ensure the trek is both comfortable and accessible, daily luggage transfers are included, meaning you will only carry a light day pack while hiking. Each evening, your main luggage awaits at your accommodation, allowing you to fully enjoy the trail without unnecessary strain. Combined with hand-picked lodgings, traditional meals, and expert guidance, this journey offers a seamless and deeply rewarding way to experience one of Japan’s most iconic pilgrimage routes.

Hike Like a Woman with Rebecca Walsh
Hi, I’m Rebecca. I’m a guide, ski instructor, Army Veteran, breast cancer survivor, mountain climber, and a big fan of adventure travel. I started Hike Like a Woman in 2014 because I wanted to smash barriers to entry into the outdoors and help women explore. So far, I’ve led over 50 group trips, from the Wyoming wilderness to the rugged Andes and the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro. I’d love to have you join me on an adventure.
Itinerary
Day 1 Arrival in Osaka
Welcome to Japan. Upon arrival at Kansai International Airport, make your way independently to your hotel in central Osaka. After settling in, you may wish to stretch your legs by exploring nearby neighbourhoods or sampling Osaka’s famous street food scene, often considered the culinary heart of the country.
This evening, the group gathers at the hotel for a welcome meeting. Your guide will outline the journey ahead, introduce the cultural and spiritual significance of the Kumano Kodo, and answer any practical questions before the trek begins.

In the afternoon, a local bus takes you to Takijiri-oji, the historic starting point of the Nakahechi route. From here, begin a gentle introductory hike through forested hills and rural landscapes, finishing in the mountain village of Takahara, known for its sweeping views and peaceful atmosphere.
